Dealing with Street Cat Rescues in Cairo

Street Cat Rescue 101

Cairo has millions of street cats. Many Egyptians have a deep compassion for these animals, and rescue culture is growing rapidly. Whether you found an injured cat or a litter of abandoned kittens, this guide will help you take the right steps.

Step 1: Assess the Situation

Not every street cat needs rescuing. Healthy adult cats who are part of a community colony are often best left where they are (consider TNR - Trap, Neuter, Return instead). Rescue is needed when:

  • The cat is injured or visibly sick
  • Kittens are found without a mother (wait 2-3 hours first — mom may be hunting)
  • The cat is in immediate danger (near traffic, construction, aggressive dogs)

Step 2: Safe Capture

Use a towel or blanket to gently wrap the cat. Injured cats may scratch or bite out of fear. Wear gloves if available. Place in a secure carrier or cardboard box with air holes.

Step 3: First Vet Visit

Take the cat to a veterinarian as soon as possible for:

  • General health check
  • Flea and tick treatment (very common in Egyptian strays)
  • Deworming
  • Testing for FIV/FeLV if the cat will be around other cats

Cairo Rescue Organizations

These organizations can help with rescue, fostering, and adoption:

  • ESMA (Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals) - One of Egypt's oldest animal welfare organizations
  • SPARE (Society for Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt) - Active rescue and adoption network
  • Animal Protection Foundation Egypt - Vet care assistance and TNR programs

Cost of Rescue and Rehabilitation

Budget approximately:

  • Initial vet check: 200-400 EGP
  • Flea treatment: 150-300 EGP
  • Deworming: 100-200 EGP
  • Vaccination (basic): 300-600 EGP
  • Spay/Neuter: 500-1,500 EGP
  • Total first month: approximately 1,250-3,000 EGP
