New Kitten Checklist: Everything You Need in Egypt

Kittens are playful, curious, and a little chaotic. A bit of preparation makes the transition smooth for both of you. Here is everything you need before and after your kitten arrives.
Essential Supplies
- Litter box + litter — 150–400 EGP to start
- Food and water bowls — ceramic or stainless steel, 100–300 EGP
- Kitten food — high-quality dry/wet formula (see below)
- Scratching post — saves your furniture, 200–600 EGP
- Carrier — for vet trips, 250–700 EGP
- Toys — wand toys and balls for healthy play
- Bed or blanket — a cosy, washable spot of their own
Feeding Your Kitten
Kittens need food specifically formulated for growth — adult cat food lacks the calories and nutrients they require. Feed small meals 3–4 times a day. Trusted brands available in Egypt include Royal Canin Kitten, Whiskas Junior, and Brit Care Kitten. Always provide fresh water and avoid cow's milk, which causes diarrhoea.
First Vet Visit and Vaccinations
Schedule a check-up within the first week. Your vet will set up a vaccination schedule (typically starting at 6–8 weeks), deworm your kitten, and advise on flea prevention. Discuss spaying or neutering, usually done around 4–6 months.
Kitten-Proofing Your Home
- Secure all windows and balconies with screens — falls are the #1 kitten injury in Egyptian apartments
- Hide electrical cords and remove toxic plants (lilies, aloe)
- Store small swallowable objects out of reach
- Keep cleaning chemicals locked away
Litter Training
Most kittens instinctively use a litter box. Place it in a quiet, accessible spot away from food. Show your kitten the box after meals and naps. Scoop daily — cats refuse a dirty box and may eliminate elsewhere.
Socialisation
The weeks between 8 and 16 weeks are golden for socialisation. Gently expose your kitten to handling, gentle sounds, and visitors so they grow into a confident, friendly adult cat.
